Virtual Forum on the Future of Journalism Education in the World
(with focus on Asia Pacific)
What should be the role of professional journalists in the next 10 years? What journalism practices do you consider ethical? What directions should journalism evolve? What are the important qualifications of a journalism educator? These and other issues will be discussed in the forum, The Future of Journalism Education in the World (with focus on Asia Pacific).
This virtual event is scheduled on 14 December 2021 at 15:00 to 17:00 (Singapore Standard Time). It is organized by the Manila-based Asian Media Information and Communication Centre, Inc. (AMIC), Academy of Journalism and Communication in Hanoi, and the World Journalism Education Council (WJEC) with support from UNESCO.
At the forum, WJEC vice chairman Prof. Nico Drok will present the highlights of the recently completed survey, Journalistic Roles, Values and Qualifications in the 21st century; How Journalism Educators Across the Globe View the Future of a Profession In Transition. His presentation will focus on the Asian setting.
Professor Drok’s presentation will be followed by reactions from three distinguished Asian journalism educators: Professor B.P. Sanjay of Manipal Institute of Communication (MAHE) and Former Director of India Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC); Dr. Ying Chan, professor and founding director, Journalism and Media Studies Centre, The University of Hong Kong; and Professor Danilo A. Arao, editor, Media Asia and associate professor, Department of Journalism of the College of Mass Communication University of the Philippines.
The study will compare how journalism educators across the globe, including in Asia, view the future of a profession in transition. The results of this global comparative study will be presented at the World Journalism Education Congress in Beijing in July 2022.
For AMIC, the study will enable the regional organization to produce a comprehensive profile of journalism educators in the region which can inform future AMIC programs and projects.
