World Journalism Education Council in cooperation with UNESCO
Journalism education for the 21st century
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The World Journalism Education Council is pleased to invite expressions of interest to participate in the project “Journalism education for the 21st century.”
This project responds to the vision of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication for strengthening global journalism education. It aims to increase partnership with UNESCO by supporting collaboration between journalism educators worldwide and by building stronger relationships with industry, civil society organizations, and appropriate government bodies in hope of nurturing and guiding quality journalism globally. The following calls are now open:
1. HOSTING A ROUNDTABLE
These will be global consultations on the issues and challenges in journalism and journalism education.
The multi-stakeholder “roundtables” will be organized in different regions of the world and concern the WJEC Paris Declaration and its linkage to the role of journalism education in regard to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, tackling the issues of the pandemic, and exploring solutions to the issue of resourcing of journalism education.
The ambition is that approximately 15 events will be organised in 2021, with written reports of each roundtable made available for the WJEC website.
Financial support of USA $2,000 can be provided to the organisers in the event that UNESCO funding becomes available.
It is hoped these roundtables, face-to-face and/or online, will investigate solutions to the current issues and challenges in journalism education. Each roundtable is envisaged as an opportunity to expand collaboration between journalism educators, to create partnerships with industry, civil society organisations, UNESCO and appropriate government bodies to grow and guide quality journalism education.
Host Expression of Interest Guidelines
If you would like to host a roundtable, expressions of interest should include
- Host name and affiliation/location
- Roundtable topic
- Brief description of the activity and guests
- Required technology and/or software needs to participants
- Date(s) you plan to host the roundtable (any time April to December 2021)
Due date for expression of interest: 26 March 2021
Submissions should be sent to contact@wjec.net and be in Word or PDF format.
2. EDITING A HANDBOOK “TEACHING JOURNALISM ONLINE”
The WJEC is welcoming applications to edit a handbook “Teaching journalism online.”
Targeted at the full spectrum of journalism teaching situations around the world, this new
handbook aims to support journalism educators in designing courses for fully online or hybrid delivery.
New forms of teaching provide an opportunity to address some of the challenges that saturate teaching and learning in traditional contexts, such as the balance between knowledge and skill components in course design. The issue of online and hybrid pedagogy depends on what part of the wider curriculum the course is being taught, and some particular examples of successful course outlines are expected to be used as illustrations.
This handbook should serve as a guideline for navigating teaching journalism online and dealing with issues such as technology; reach; peer-to-peer engagement; communities of learning among learners; guest lecturers and webinars; interactivity; evaluation; etc.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, the following details are requested
- An outline of the handbook, description of the research gathering process, a table of contents, and potential collaborators.
- A timetable and a plan for implementation
Guidelines for editor(s)
- The proposals and subsequent drafts should be written in English, with the possibility of publication in other languages at a later date.
- Proposals will be reviewed and selected based on quality and appropriateness for the UNESCO series on Journalism Education.
- A corresponding visibility plan to help with the promotion of the final publication will be a positive factor in considering the proposal.
You are invited to submit proposals by 26 March 2021 to contact@wjec.net. If yours is accepted, the editor(s) will be contacted before or on 1 May 2021.
3. EDITING A HANDBOOK “REPORTING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE”
The WJEC is welcoming applications for editing a handbook “Reporting Artificial Intelligence: a handbook for journalism teachers.”
Following the models of UNESCO Series on Journalism Education, such as the handbook for journalism teaching about “Journalism, ‘Fake News’ and Disinformation”
the new handbook on reporting AI should outline modules with class exercises, concerning what students need to know about the technical, business, legal, ethical and policy debates surrounding reporting on and coverage of AI. The handbook should also take into account the international differences in contexts of journalism education as well as in the development and deployment of AI.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, the following details are requested
- An outline of the handbook, including a table of contents, subheads if available and potential contributors.
- A timetable and a plan for implementation.
