The next World Journalism Education Congress will be held a year later than originally planned.
Following a decision at the WJEC Council’s July meeting, the Congress will run in 2023 rather than 2022. The 6th WJEC is hosted by universities in Beijing and Shanghai.
The postponement had been forced by the ongoing pandemic, restricted international travel, limited university funding, and the absence of a global ‘vaccine passport’ regime.
Previous congresses had demonstrated that WJEC provided a uniquely harmonious and co-operative environment in which journalism educators from different cultures and backgrounds could share common challenges and innovations.
Hosting WJEC also benefitted journalism education in the region in which individual congresses were held. By focussing on convergences rather than divergences, the congress environment contributed to internationalizing journalism education.
At a time of major international upheaval, WJEC played an important role as a conduit for bringing together journalism educators from all continents to develop, strengthen and affirm global journalism education by providing a common space to share experiences and best practice.
